Hippo Dominates Hockey Tournament

Written by Pritchard Matambo

HockeyHippo Hockey maintained their dominance in Zimbabwean hockey with a spirited consistence performance during the inaugural Mantra sponsored hockey tournament played at Arundel Hockey stadium on the 14/15th July. The tournament featured Mabvuku HC, Eradicators HC, Bindura HC, Mutare HC and the two Lowveld teams Hippo HC and Huletts HC. The event saw teams from around Zimbabwe that do not regularly play on Astroturf, competing in what is seen as the first of many development events to promote hockey in formerly disadvantaged communities.

Bindura HC this year put up a spirited performance to finish 4th. This year Alistair Chando, a 1st Year medical student-in-waiting, scooped the Most Promising Player award. One of the clubs junior development programme products, Alistair has shown great growth and is now one of their star players. He will no doubt feature in Provincial and National events in the near future. The award for the tournament's Most Outstanding goal keeper also went to Bindura, with Prosper Machuwe collecting the accolade.

Huletts HCNewly formed Huletts HC (left) showed they are a real force to be reckoned with, winning 3 games and scoring 15 goals yet conceding 6 goals. Huletts HC is another team from the Tongaat Hulett Chiredzi based operation in the Lowveld; the team, alongside Hippo HC, is currently playing in the National league that features the top 6 sides in the country. The derby game Hippo against Huletts Hockey proved to be a thriller with no love lost between the 2 Tongaat teams. However experience won the day with Hippo overcoming their younger siblings 5–2. The team finished on 10 points joining Eradicators on 2nd place with similar goal difference.

HockeyIn the round robin tournament, Hippo won all 5 of their games scoring 22 goals and conceding 3 goals. With their usual high level of creativity ability, Hippo broke down the opposition teams time and time again. Hippo encountered the expected resistance from their long time bitter rivals, Eradicators, in the final game. The Mufakose based outfit (pictured right), who are the current - 2012 Harare indoor league champions came out all guns blazing and caused a scary moment in the Hippo camp after scoring first in the first 15 minutes. Despite conceding a goal, like true champions, Hippo regrouped, refocused and showed their determination much to the applause and appreciation of the crowd. An equaliser is all that was needed to unsettle their bitter rivals. With super ball skills and a high level of possession, it came as no surprise when the equaliser came 10 minutes later from inspirational midfield maestro, Donald Mutupo. From then on, Eradicators were chasing shadows and their fate was sealed by a second goal from striker Paul Dakarai.

HockeyThe Hippo's win means that they have now won two major tournament in Zimbabwe after clinching the City of Kings Easter Hockey tournament on the 6/8th of April at Khumalo Hockey stadium after a nail biting final against the Bulawayo hockey champions BAC. The team have their sights set on scoping the remaining 3 major trophy’s still up for grabs, namely The IPT tournament in August, The HAZ cup in September, and the coveted National League title winning which will see them qualify for the Africa Cup for Club Champions for the 2nd year in a row. They will not find the going easy as Harare based Enthusiasts have made a strong start and are currently leading the National League table after upsetting Hippo (3-2) in the first game of the season. With that loss, Hippo succumbed to their first league defeat in three years. Hippo next faces arguably their stiffest challenge this weekend when they take on BAC at their home ground Khumalo in Bulawayo. Hippo will also meet Kings HC this weekend in the double header.
